The General Board of Higher Education and Ministry (GBHEM) awarded 47 students from churches across the Tennessee conference just over $88,000 in scholarship funds in 2020. The amounts for individual awards ranged from $13,000 to $500 over 13 different scholarships. Twenty-nine churches and thirty-three universities and seminaries were represented. Eight of the scholarship recipients are seminary students.
The GBHEM awarded 2,100 students across the country a total of $5.6 million dollars in financial support this year. This was funded in part by church donations on United Methodist Student Day, World Communion Sunday, and Native American Sunday.
Students who are members of The United Methodist Church may apply for a Fall 2021 GBHEM scholarship online between December 15, 2020 – March 24, 2021, at www.gbhem.org/scholarshipapplication.
Student loans are also available at interest rates as low as 3.75% (lower than federal educational loan rates) with a creditworthy cosigner. Sometimes the United Methodist student loan helps fill the gap in funding for the student and their parents. The UM Student Spring Loan application is open December 10 through May at www.gbhem.org/loanapplication.
