Sue Stein and Merrilee Wineinger delivered postcards to Senator Lamar Alexander and Senator Bob Corker signed by members of West End UMC. The members signed postcards with personal messages to encourage our Senators not to repeal Obamacare (ACA) without an immediate replacement.
In a speech on January 10th, Senator Alexander stated, “The American people deserve health care reform that’s done in the right way, for the right reasons, in the right amount of time. It’s not about developing a quick fix. It’s about working toward long-term solutions that work for everyone.”
Senator Corker shared a similar statement, “Repealing President Obama’s health care law and replacing it with a responsible alternative is a top priority, and by exercising due diligence we can create a stable transition to an open health care marketplace that provides far greater choice and more affordable plans for the American people.”
Sue Stein Chair Lay Leadership at West End UMC, organized two opportunities for members to learn how our faith connects to our advocacy work. Sue opened the panel with tears as she told her story of gratitude that her husband Forrest Stein had health insurance during his long illness that led to his death. Sue’s story did not end there. She continued, at the time that Forest was in and out of the hospital, the their hearts bled with compassion for those who could not afford health insurance. These patients needed the same dialysis treatment to keep them alive as Forrest received. Sue recalled the story about a lady who couldn’t not afford the treatment and without hope went home to die.
West End’s senior pastor, Rev. Michael Williams’ shared about Jesus who never charged for health care and John Wesley who wrote the Primitive Physick with health remedies for the poor. Rev. Merrilee Wineinger TNUMC Faith That Heals Coordinator described the Conference’s ongoing advocacy efforts in support of accessible, affordable, accountable and high-quality healthcare. Tony Garr founder of the Tennessee Health Care Campaign and now volunteer explained what’s at stake if Obamacare was replaced without a replacement. As the program ended, participants dropped their signed postcards into a weaved basket. The next day, Evann Freeman, Field Representative for Senator Lamar Alexander and Katy Miller, Constituent Services Representative for Senator Corker accepted the postcards with the message “Thank you for your leadership to ensure that the ACA is not repealed without an immediate replacement.
Senator Alexander and Corker want to hear from you, today. Tell them that you support No Repeal without an Immediate Replacement.
