Attendees from across the Tennessee Conference gathered on Thursday, Feb. 23 for the first Next Gen Book Club to discuss Growing Young: Six Essential Strategies to Help Young People Discover and Love Your Church.

Rev. Joanna Cummings, Director of Children’s Ministry at The Village Church Nashville, facilitated the discussion, sharing insight she gained from reading and implementing the book’s strategies. She has a deep love for partnering with families to help children grow in their faith, and believes it “takes a village” to form the faith of children.

The book is a result of research conducted by the Fuller Youth Institute at Fuller Theological Seminary in California. Authors Kara Powell, Jake Mulder and Brad Griffin share these important findings to encourage ministry leaders to position their churches to engage younger generations in a way that breathes vitality, life and energy into the whole church.

Over lunch, attendees discussed the six core commitments a church needs to “grow young,” which includes unlocking keychain leadership, empathizing with today’s young people, taking Jesus’ message seriously, fueling a warm community, prioritizing young people and families everywhere, and being the best neighbors.

Next Gen ministries hopes to continue the book club monthly with other suggested readings. For more information on the next session, please contact Brad Fiscus and Jullie Meyer at
