United Methodist Volunteers in Mission

Training Opportunities | United Methodist Volunteers in Mission | Opportunities to Serve

Most of Jesus’ ministry was spent outside of the local synagogue, directly impacting people in the countryside and marketplace of His first century world. It was a successful strategy that launched the Christian Church worldwide.

Volunteers In Mission uses this same philosophy of taking the loving, compassionate and giving nature Jesus showed to people who might be as close as our neighborhood or as far away as a distant continent. Volunteers In Mission exists to promote, encourage and enable Christians to exemplify “Christian Love in Action.” VIM provides opportunities for service through short term mission projects.

Mission PictureThis is an exciting ministry and you are invited to be part of it. There are many ways to be a part of UMVIM, including:

  • serving as a short term team member
  • offering financial support
  • praying for the teams and the people they serve
  • collecting items needed for the particular team mission

What is UMVIM?

United Methodist Volunteers in Mission is the short-term mission arm of the United Methodist Church.  Our volunteers are lay and clergy, young and old, with differing abilities, vocations and at different phases in life.  We come together through the United Methodist Church so all may offer their skills and talents for Christian service at home and abroad.

Our emphasis is upon matching persons with opportunities so everyone may participate in mission.  After all, mission is not only for those who live in the field full-time. God calls all Christians “to bring good news to the oppressed [and] to bind up the broken-hearted” (Isaiah 61:1).  We believe no matter who you are, no matter the level of your resources, no matter how big or small your church, God is calling you to mission.

UMVIM exists to connect you with mission projects, both in your backyard and across the globe.  Within the United Methodist Church, UMVIM relates closely with annual conference UMVIM committees and the General Board of Global Ministries, all of which seek to serve as a source of information for potential volunteers.
