The Exploring the Realities of Racism Initiative, sanctioned by Bishop McAlilly, was launched at the Tennessee Annual Conference on June 10, 2016 during an afternoon General session. Later that afternoon, a diverse group of 94 persons representing all of the districts including lay and clergy, young and old, Conference staff persons, Cabinet members, task force members and Rev. Giovanni Arroyo from the General Commission on Religion and Race (GCORR) gathered to learn together and engage in Holy Conversations about race.
The energy and witness of those present attested to the urgency and validity of addressing the realities of racism.
The task force embraces the values of GCORR “which are based on the Biblical imperative of right relationships with God and with one another – relationships of: Love, Grace, Equity, Justice, and Mutual Accountability. The task force invites all persons to embrace our Biblical and Methodist heritage in joining God in the building of the beloved kingdom in the here and now in the following ways:
- Humble ourselves
- Seek God ‘s face
- Turn from our wicked ways (II Chronicles 7:14)
- Commit to initiating and modeling Holy Conversations on race within the next three months
- Get involved with the Exploring the Realities of Racism Task Force
