The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted all of our lives, including the church. The former ways and patterns of being and doing have been permanently changed. As people of faith, we are challenged to ask what is the new thing that God is doing in our midst? How do we adapt and continue to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ? How do we remain agile, nimble, and flexible as we move into an unknown future with a known God? The mission and vision of the church has not changed. The strategies and methods of engagement will need to be changed to continue to be effective witnesses for Christ. We have the historical witness that when we walk together as the beloved community with the village concept, we are stronger together. We need each other to survive.
Pillars of Cloud and Fire, a educational webinar experience from the Tennessee Conference Black Methodist for Church Renewal, is grounded in the belief that God will guide us through the pandemic. The mission and vision for the short term may be blurry; however, our long-term vision for the church should remain clear and guide our current actions in the here and now. As God provided a pillar of cloud to guide the Israelites by day and also a pillar of fire by night to guide and protect the Israelites during their exodus from Egyptian bondage in Exodus 13:21-22, God will provide pillars of cloud and fire to lead us through the wilderness of this COVID-19 pandemic.
With confidence in God, who will never leave us nor forsake us, the intention of this series of webinars is to: raise awareness, provide basic information to equip with tools and resources, and provide strategies to navigate this current wilderness invoked by the pandemic. Learn from reverends and reverend doctors concerning topics ranging from getting creative financially to discussing domestic abuse and violence as well as the tough topic of Christian nationalism.
