Gift Legacy e-Newsletter is the name of a new newsletter from the United Methodist Foundation for the Memphis and Tennessee Conferences.Anyone – laity and clergy - may sign up to receive the weekly electronic publication that will include information about estate and financial planning, personal interest stories, Washington news and financial updates, according to Vin Walkup, President of the Foundation.
The first issue will be emailed Feb. 19.
Gift Legacy e-Newsletter is replacing the print publication, Clergy Finance Letter, that has been mailed to Memphis Conference clergy from the Foundation six times a year since 1997, said Walkup.
Clergy Finance Letter has ceased publication due to the retirement of the editor, Wayne Barrett, said Walkup. The recent “tax preparation” issue was the last issue.
The Foundation is using emails it has collected to distribute the new Gift Legacy e-Newsletter.

Foundation board approves name change (Press release, 8/19/11)
For immediate release
Contact: Sara Finger (email)
Dr. Vin Walkup, President of The Nashville Area United Methodist Foundation, announced today that the Foundation Board, in its quarterly meeting on August 16, 2011, unanimously approved changing the name of the Foundation. The new name is United Methodist Foundation for the Memphis and Tennessee Conferences.
Dr. Walkup said, “The new name will make it easier for people in churches across the two conferences to readily know the scope of our ministries. I have jokingly said that only the United Methodist Church considers the 'Nashville Area' to include middle and west Tennessee and the purchase area of Kentucky. This name should be clear that we are a ministry for all churches and agencies of these two conferences.”
Official changes with the states, general church, and others, and in brochures and official documents will take several weeks, but the new name will be used immediately. Email addresses and other contact information will continue to be valid as the transition takes place. New logos are currently being developed and will be released at a later date.
Nashville Area Foundation announces new vice-presidents (from TNUMConnects 4/27/11)

The Nashville Area United Methodist Foundation President, Rev. Dr. Vincent (Vin) Walkup, announced today that the Board of Directors has approved Christine (Chrissy) Booth and David R. Reed as Vice-Presidents for Planned Giving and Development. Chrissy and David will be working with Vin to assist churches and ministries of the Tennessee and Memphis Conferences in promoting planned giving as a means of extending the love of Christ and passions for ministries across time. They will work with directors and boards of extension ministries, pastors, local church Trustees and Endowment Committees to help people make financial gifts for endowments and other funds.
Chrissy and David are both deeply committed United Methodists. Chrissy is a member of St. Bethlehem United Methodist in Clarksville, and David is a member of First United Methodist in Martin.
Chrissy is currently employed at Austin Peay State University as Director of Major Gifts. She has also worked for American Cancer Society in Paducah and the twelve counties of west Kentucky, as Associate Director for Development of Major Gifts – University Libraries at Murray State University, and as Director of Development: College of Mass Communications and Information Studies at the University of South Carolina. Her church membership prior to St. Bethlehem includes Benton First and St. Paul in Saluda, South Carolina.
David has spent his career helping people deal with matters of personal or corporate finance. With Met Life,
he earned
certification and gained experience in estate planning. He has worked with owners of companies in mergers and sales, helping to structure their financial matters. Since moving back to Martin in 1996, David has served his church and the Memphis Conference in several capacities – including chairing Communications for the conference and the budget committee of Connectional Ministries. He also served briefly as the first Director of Development for Lakeshore Assembly. David has served on the board of the Society of St. Andrew and is currently a member of the boards for the United Methodist Men’s Foundation and the Foundation for Evangelism.
Dr. Walkup said, “Chrissy and David bring a great opportunity for all of us together to make a difference for decades to come. The vision for their roles comes from a belief that God will be doing a great work through the churches and ministries of The United Methodist Church in this region for decades to come. We want to be a part of that work, even after we are gone.”
Opportunities to meet Chrissy Booth and David R. Reed, and to learn more about the ministries and opportunities through the Foundation will come later this year with dinners across the area. Dinners will be held in Cookeville, Dickson, Hermitage, Jackson, Manchester, Memphis, Paducah, Paris, and Savannah. Dates and specific locations will be announced by the end of May.

Tom and Betty Cloyd Scholarship Recipient Named (from The Connector, February 2011)
Rev. Dr. Vin Walkup, President of The Nashville Area United Methodist Foundation, announces that the recipient of the Tom and Betty Cloyd Scholarship is Johnathan Lee Jones from Hendersonville. Johnathan is a member of Hendersonville First United Methodist Church and a sophomore at High Point University in High Point, North Carolina.
The Foundation has partnered with the United Methodist Higher Education Foundation, Hendersonville Church, and High Point University in the United Methodist Dollars for Scholars Program. In this program a student’s home church provides $1000.00 for a scholarship that is matched by each of the other partners to make a $4000.00 award. In this case, the Tom and Betty Cloyd Scholarship Fund provided the matching funds through the Foundation.
The Tom and Betty Cloyd Scholarship Fund was created by Belle Meade United Methodist Church to honor the Cloyds’ ministries through the years. Two years ago, the fund was placed with the Nashville Area United Methodist Foundation for investing and distributing one or more scholarships each year. The Cloyds continue to be consulted about possible recipients, and Johnathan was the student chosen this year. Anyone wishing to honor the Cloyds may make a contribution to the Foundation (304 S. Perimeter Park Dr., Suite 3, Nashville, TN 37211) at any time with gifts being placed in the Scholarship Fund. (For information regarding the establishment of a scholarship fund, contact the Foundation office – 615.259.2008.)
The United Methodist Dollars for Scholars program awards 475 scholarships annually. Applicants must be enrolled or planning to enroll as a full-time student in a United Methodist related college, university, or seminary, and be an active member of The United Methodist Church for at least one year. The home church agrees to provide a $1000.00 scholarship, which then is matched by the United Methodist Higher Education Foundation (UMHEF), the United Methodist school, and another donor. If you would like to know more about this program, contact UMHEF (615.340.7421) or visit their website – www.umhef.org.
Applications are accepted now through March 1 for the upcoming academic year.
