Board of Camp and Retreat Ministries announcement from Chair Bud Alexander

johnston.jpgIn order to enhance our ministries, the Conference Board of Camp and Retreat Ministries (BCRM) is pleased to announce that the Director, Dickie Hinton, will be devoting much of his work to development, marketing, and fund raising for Cedar Crest and Beersheba, as well as continuing to supervise both facilities. In order to expand the quality of work Dickie has brought to Beersheba, the BCRM has hired David Johnston as Director of Beersheba Springs Assembly and his wife Vanessa as Director of Food Services.

David comes to Beersheba from having served as the Executive Director of Skye Farm Camp and Retreat Center, a United Methodist Camp in upper New York. He has a B.S. in Education from Springfield College and an M.A. in Administration from the University of New Hampshire. He has completed requirements to become a certified Camp Director of the United Methodist Church. Vanessa brings experience at camp as well as food service and many radical hospitality skills.

These staff changes will continue the rich tradition of Welcoming, Restoring, and Transforming ministries at Beersheba and will develop a sustainable future for our camping ministries and facilities. Please join the Board of Camp and Retreat Ministries as we welcome the Johnston’s to Tennessee and Beersheba Springs Assembly.

Camp fires up students, staff this summer (from TNUMConnector, Aug. 2011)

camp.png

from Katie Taylor, Cedar Crest Camp Director

The 2011 summer camp season has come to a close and it has been an EPIC one! We saw over 300 children this summer - all who experienced a wide range of activities including: swimming, creek stomping, late night capture the flag, Bible studies, singing, making tin foil meals, campfires, tie-dye, nature explorations, making new friends and of course gaga ball.

This season wouldn’t have been as successful if it wasn’t for the amazing individuals that comprised the 2011 staff. We were lucky enough to even have staff members from all over the world this year. In addition to all that camp had to offer, our campers also benefitted by the opportunities to interact with people from other cultures.

Cedar Crest has seen quite a bit of change in the past year. We are confident that these changes are helping to make for the best camping experiences for students across the TN Conference and beyond. I would personally like to thank you for supporting Cedar Crest this summer through your prayers, promotions, for volunteering and for most of all attending camp. I look forward to working with the parents, their “campers” and members of the TN Conference in the upcoming months.

from the Cedar Crest Camp staff:
Cedar Crest would like to extend a huge thank you to Cindy Haley, the Methodist Board of Higher Education and Ministry along with the General Board of Discipleship employees. Through their cake walk and bake sale called “Cakes for Campers,” four campers were able to attend Cedar Crest this summer. By those donations alone these four were allowed the opportunity to experience God’s love in a unique setting and were able to begin meaningful relationships that will last a lifetime. Thank you for supporting our ministry!
